Free Teacher Professional Development: Putting the Language Back into English Language Learning in Content Classrooms

Mainstream teachers are often unprepared or underprepared to meet the language learning needs of ELLs in the mainstream classroom. While a number of approaches focus on ways to build these skills ( SIOP, Content Based Instruction, English for Academic Purposes) they often require that EITHER mainstream teachers OR ESL teachers perform these skills in isolation. We discuss how collaborative practices between mainstream and content teachers can be an effective way to accomplish the language learning goals for ELLS in both the mainstream and ESL setting, as well as discuss ways in which we can prepare mainstream teachers, with proper support, to develop language -driven content objectives that focus on the development of BOTH language and content.
