Which Software to Use for Online Teaching Video Conferencing or LMS
In this video Dr Tahir Yaqub explains why a video conferencing software are not good enough for online teaching and teachers must start using a Learning Management System (LMS) early in their online teaching career.
First some of the core features of video conferencing software are discussed. These include the number of participants, the duration of a meeting allowed, the way the software generates a meeting ID, because it should not be easily guessed like zoom which generates a number. Then there should be only one host controlling the video conference. However we also want the ability of the host to transfer the control of the meeting to someone else. This is important in situation where you are conducting a video conference and for some reason you need to go away. We should also look for a chat feature, a raise hand feature and a whiteboard where teacher can explain some examples or draw some arrows or lines. We also want the ability to record and store the video conference and the ability of the software to integrate with other apps.
Then we discuss what are the limitations of the video conference software and why we need a learning management system. There are some critical functions of an online teacher such as giving assignments and collecting on due dates, having interactive quizzes to get student engagement, commodification with the parents if you are a K12 teacher etc. These features are not available in a video conference software and Dr Tahir Yaqub recommends that online teachers should start using a LMS as soon as possible.
Then some security standards such as SOC2, ISO 27001 family of standards, PCI DSS or HIP AA etc should be checked in a software before start using it for your school and college.
